Term Definition

G

GC Shorthand for Gender Change. Used in cases where a male is transformed into a female, or a female is trandformed into a male. Also noted down as TG (Trans Gender)
Gargoyle Derived from French, Gargoyle litterally means "Gurgler" as the original function of these statues was to act as downspouts, directing water away from churches and cathedral foundations. As time went on, the gargoyle went from having a practical use to becomeing yet another ornament upon the cathedral, symbolising a variety of man's evils, follies and weaknesses, and sometimes contemporary figures or members of the construction crew. The National Cathedral in Washington D.C. for instance has a gargoyle style head carved in the likeness of Darth Vader, among many others. In transformation, Disneys "Gargoyles" cartoon series portrayed the sculptures as guardians who were active at night, but turned to stone during the day.
Genesis 1. The first book of the Bible. Apparently in the Koran (Islamic) version of Genesis, there is a transformation of sorts - apparently Adam and Eve where covered with a shell-like skin. When they were cast out of Eden, the shell fell apart, and all that is left of it on humans are toenails and fingernails. 2. The beginning or base of something.
Genetic Engineering Tampering with genes to make something "better".
Genie Also known as Djinn, Jann, Jinn, Jnun and a variety of other local names in the Muslim world. In popular Western culture, based largely on "Tales of the Thousand and One Nights" genies are powerful sources of magic, linked to a specific container such as a lamp or bottle, and compelled to grant the wishes of the possessor of their container. However, in traditional Islamic lore, Genies are usually portrayed as evil or mischevious spirits, although there are some tales where they are benevolent.
Ghosts Usually, a spirit of the deceased, which in the real world often is not aware that they are dead, or have the need to complete a task. Reports of such spirits sometimes have them without any legs, as they hover over the ground. In fiction, stories and movies, creators have seized on this ethereal quality to allow them to shapeshift into whatever they envision, although that ghostly quality remains present. See also Possession.
Giant A being or thing that is larger than normal. Naturally occurring giants do occur, sometimes reaching the height of ten feet or more, although most modern people are taller than those in the past due to better nutrition and medical technology. This is made clear when people visit older houses that were built to size for their inhabitants. See GTS.
Gigantopithecus The largest primate that ever lived, Gigantopithecus arose and apparently died off during the Pleistocene era (13 million years ago to 500,000 years ago). This giant ape stood between nine to ten feet tall and probably weighed more than 600 lbs. The few specimens found so far are mainly from China, where their bones are prized as "Dragon's Bomes" - a potent ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine. However, some argue that the species survives to this day, and are the source of Yeti and Bigfoot sightings. See also Wild Men.
Golem A creature from Eastern European/Austrian Jewish legends, and the prototype for "Frankenstein". The Golem was a creature made from clay and granted life by a skilled Rabbi so that it could protect the oppressed Jewish comminity. However the golem would inevitably run amok in most stories, and would have to be rendered inanimate.
Gorgons The once beautiful daughters of Ceto and the Old Man of the Sea, who were transformed into horrible parodies of their former selves by the vengeful goddess Athene. They are all described as having snakes for hair, and scales. Gazing on their faces could turn a person to stone. Two of the three, Euryale and Stheno were immortal, but the third sister, Medusa, who had incurred Athene's wrath by being seduced by Poseidon in Athene's temple (and thus desecrating it) was mortal and was eventually slain by the hero Perseus. When used in the singular (Gorgon) it usually refers to Medusa. As for Euryale and Stheno, their fate is unknown.
Gray Gargoyle A Marvel Comics super-villian who has the ability to turn himself into animated stone, and whose touch will turn people into inanimate stone for a period of time that is dependant on how long he touches them.
GTS Shorthand for GianTesS - aka a giant female.
Gynoid A robot or cyborg with female attributes or parts. The term was initially coined by the British Science Fiction author Gwyneth Jones, and has been adopted by a number of other writers and artists. The masculine use of the term is android (see android)
